Lightning Disrupts Match, Western Falls to Saint Louis 3-1

The Leathernecks led 1-0 heading into the delay.

Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer lost to Saint Louis on Friday (Sept. 5) night 3-1. Western Illinois drops to 1-4 in 2014.

The Leathernecks jumped in front early, taking advantage of an early mistake from the Billikens. Sarah Wright intercepted a pass inside the 18-yard box and promptly finished off her chance, giving Western a 1-0 advantage.

The Leathernecks carried the lead into the 19th minute when lightning was detected, forcing the game to move into a delay. Following a two hour and 45 minute weather delay, Saint Louis (3-2) scored three times in 12 minutes, taking a 3-1 lead after 35 minutes of play.

Brianna Hughes nearly scored off of a corner sent in by Andrea Ferguson, but her effort was cleared off the line as time ran out in the first half.

After the break, the Leathernecks had a pair of opportunities to draw closer, but both Tiara Herron and Skyler Jessop had chances saved just minutes apart.

"No words describe my astonishment in conceding three goals in twelve minutes, kind of in the same fashion as we did against Creighton and Loyola," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "That has proven to be our undoing and our Achilles' heel. It is my responsibility to do a better job with our team. The players give everything and work hard, I have to do a better job for them to help us win and get the results we deserve."

Western Illinois returns home to play host to Valparaiso as part of a doubleheader on Sunday (Sept. 7). Following the men's match against Green Bay at 12 p.m. (CT), Western and Valpo are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
