Leathernecks Fall on Labor Day

Western Illinois was defeated 4-0 by Creighton on Monday (Sept. 1).

Box Score
OMAHA, Neb. – Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer lost 4-0 to Big East Conference foe Creighton on Monday (Sept. 1). Western Illinois now stands at 1-3 on the year.

"It's not the result we wanted and the score line is interesting," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "We missed five stone cold sitters from three-to-seven yards out and the match turned on a missed attacking header for a goal and they came down the other way and tucked one into the net. I thought Skyler and Sarah Wright were exceptional, and as a team we carved out enough chances to be in the match. We have to be far more clinical in the attacking third and score goals. Goals change matches. It was a fairly good effort until we capitulated three goals in ten minutes."

Creighton (3-0) put Western Illinois under pressure immediately with three shots in the first four minutes of play. The Bluejays netted the opener after 13 minutes with an unassisted goal.

The Leathernecks responded as Abby Moore had a shot sail just past the post seven minutes after the Bluejays took the lead. Tyra Markey followed, but her effort was saved in the 31st minute of play.

The Leathernecks continued to press forward, as Sarah Hall and Skyler Jessop both had dangerous looks at goal as the first half came to a close.

Hall got Western off on the right foot in the second 45 minutes of play, nearly scoring for Western but her shot was saved. Jessop then had a headed effort saved midway through the half.

Creighton answered, springing a counter-attack and pushing the lead to 2-0. The Bluejays also added goals in the 78th and 84th minute.

Western Illinois ends its three-game road stretch with a match at Saint Louis on Friday (Sept. 5) before returning home to face Valparaiso on Sunday (Sept. 7).
