Women's Soccer Drops Friday Night Match to Loyola

The Fighting Leathernecks fall to 1-2 in 2014.

Box Score
CHICAGO, Ill. – Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer began its three-game road swing with a 4-0 loss to Loyola-Chicago on Friday (Aug. 29). Western Illinois fell to 1-2 to begin the 2014 campaign.

"We were poor overall and they were clearly the better team on the night," said head coach Ted Flogaites "We have great players but we have to be great when it matters, not just during training. There's nothing more to say. Words at this juncture are awfully cheap.  It is evident that I am doing a bad job at present because the squad I train does not play in the manner I train them to play or compete. It is a tough night to swallow."

The opening 20 minutes were fairly defensive as neither side was able to record a shot and were held to two corners each.

The Ramblers (2-1) opened the scoring 19 minutes into the match off of a corner on the first recorded shot for either team.

Western Illinois settled back into the match, nearly finding an equalizer in the 37th minute, but Tiara Herron's effort was saved, resulting in a corner for the Leathernecks. Shortly after, Tyra Markey's shot sailed just wide.

Leatherneck goalkeeper Victoria Kappel kept Western in the match with a save, keeping the deficit at one as the opening 45 minutes concluded.

The Leathernecks survived early pressure in the second half, as the Ramblers were able to produce three shots in two minutes.

Sarah Wright had a chance to level the match but the Loyola goalkeeper was up to the challenge. Shortly after Wright was denied, Loyola-Chicago doubled its lead in the 64th minute of play.

The Ramblers added goals in the 73rd and 79th minute to conclude the scoring.

Freshman Lexi Harris entered the match in the 84th minute and recorded her first career save five minutes later.

Western Illinois is back in action with a Labor Day matinee in Omaha, Neb. against Creighton. Monday's (Sept. 1) match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
