Leathernecks Begin 2014 With Matches Against MAC Foes

Western Illinois will face Kent State on the road before opening its home schedule against Northern Illinois.

MACOMB, Ill. - The Fighting Leathernecks begin the 2014 regular season with a pair of matches against MAC opponents. On Friday (Aug. 22), Western Illinois travels to Kent, Ohio to face the Kent State Golden Flashes at 11 a.m. The on Sunday (Aug. 24) the women's soccer team opens its home schedule with a match against in-state rivals Northern Illinois at 1 p.m.

MATCH NOTES:

A LOOK AT THE GOLDEN FLASHES: The Golden Flashes were picked to finish atop the MAC East in the preseason poll... Kent State returns three members of the MAC All-Freshman team from 2013 but is tasked with replacing the MAC's leading scorer and the Co-Defensive Player of the Year... Preseason All-Mac selections Madison Helterbran and Stephanie Senn look to lead the way... Helterbran logged more than 1400 minutes last year, collecting two goals and six assists... Senn started 19 games in goal for the Golden Flashes, recording six shutouts and a 12-7-1 record... Stephanie Haugh also returns for Kent State... Haugh found the back of the net three times but added six assists... Rob Marinaro starts his 14th season in charge of the Golden Flashes.

SERIES HISTORY: Friday will be the first match between Western Illinois and Kent State... The Fighting Leathernecks are 4-9-3 against current MAC schools.

A LOOK AT THE HUSKIES: The Huskies kicked off the 2014 season with a draw against Fort Wayne in the preseason... Following a Friday (Aug. 22) match against Illinois State, the Huskies visit Macomb for the first time since 2008... Northern Illinois looks to bounce back from a 6-11-3 record in 2013... Leading goalscorer Nicole Gobo returns for her junior season after scoring six times as a sophomore... Sara Spaulding scored twice and added an assist in 850 minutes last season... The Huskies will have to replace Amy Carr in goal... Freshman Amy Annala played all 90 minutes in the preseason match against Fort Wayne in goal... John Ross begins his third season in DeKalb.

SERIES HISTORY: The Huskies and Leathernecks have played five times since 2004 but only once since 2008... Western lost the first meeting between the two schools.. Since then, the two sides have drawn three times including a 1-1 draw last season in DeKalb, Ill... Western defeated Northern 1-0 in 2007 for its lone victory over the Huskies.

EXHIBITION RECAP: The Leathernecks finished its preseason 0-2 with losses to Youngstown State and SIU-Edwardsville. After dropping its first contest 3-0, the Leathernecks fell to the Cougars 2-1... Sarah Wright scored for the Leathernecks against SIU-Edwardsville.

CLIMBING THE RANKS: Head coach Ted Flogaites has compiled 21 wins during his time at Western... The third year coach now trails only Tony Guinn (48) for most-wins in program history.

PRESEASON HONORS: Western Illinois had two members named to the preseason All-Conference Second Team by College Sports Madness... Sarah Hall led the Leathernecks offensively with five goals in 2013... The senior also scored three game-winners... Lindsay Condon logged more than 1,500 minutes in 2013 and enters her senior season anchoring a young Leatherneck backline.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: Ted Flogaites welcomes 15 freshman for the 2014 season along with two transfers... Combined with the four redshirt freshmen, 21 Leathernecks could make their official debut this fall... The current roster has seven seniors, four juniors, two sophomores and 19 freshman.

RETURNERS: Leatherneck women's soccer returns 15 players from 2013 including Second Team All-League selection Sarah Hall... Tyra Markey, who scored three goals in her freshman season also returns along with Skyler Jessop and Lindsay Condon... Condon is the only returning letterwinner defensively for coach Flogaites... Victoria Kappel returns for the Leathernecks in goal... Kappel, who sat out last season, currently sits sixth in program history in goals against average (1.53) , fourth in wins (12), fourth in shutouts (7) and fifth in minutes in goal (2,417:00).

CAPTAINS: Four members of the Leatherneck women's soccer senior class, Gina Scaffidi, Sarah Wright, Victoria Kappel and Amy Bennett will captain the squad this season.

AT THE HELM: Ted Flogaites became the fifth Western Illinois women's soccer head coach in July 2012... He joined the Leatherneck family following a five year stint at Hastings College where he amassed a record of 76-22-9 for a .745 winning percentage... In two years with the Leathernecks, he has compiled 21 wins... Flogaites graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1999 and was a member of the Gaucho men's soccer team.

2013 RECAP: The Leathernecks finished the 2013 season 8-9-2, falling just short of qualifying for the 2013 Summit League Tournament. Western Illinois scored 21 goals in 2013 but were outscored 20-11 in the second half... The Leathernecks graduated 10 members from the 2013 squad including Laura Atkinson, Amber Davis, Kristen Becker and Jordan Spaciel.

PRESEASON POLL: Western Illinois received 34 votes in the annual preseason poll and were selected to finish fifth in 2014... Denver led the way with 64 votes, followed by SDSU, NDSU and Oral Roberts... Fort Wayne, IUPUI, South Dakota and Omaha finished the preseason poll.
