Leathernecks Earn Share of Summit League Regular Season Crown

Western Illinois men's soccer earned a share of The Summit League regular season championship, despite a 1-0 loss at Denver on Saturday (Nov. 8).

DENVER, Colo. - Western Illinois men's soccer earned a share of yet another Summit League regular season championship, despite a 1-0 double overtime loss at Denver on Saturday (Nov. 8). With the loss, Western finishes the season with a record of 8-6-3 and 3-2-1 in league play. The Leathernecks' record earns them the three seed in The Summit League Tournament, which begins this Thursday (Nov. 13) in Denver, Colorado.

"We couldn't match Denver's energy. They really brought it," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "Hats off to Yves (Dietrich) and our guys for making it difficult and almost pulling it off. We are looking forward to coming back to Denver and seeing if we can perform to our potential."

The match proved to be an ongoing defensive stand for the Purple and Gold as the Pioneers outshot the Leathernecks 26-5. In the first half, Denver set the tone for the evening as the Maroon and Gold notched nine shots to Western's two. Despite the lopsided box score, WIU withstood the barrage with no damage done, and the half closed with the score knotted at 0.

In the second half, the story proved to be similar as Western withstood another offensive barrage from Denver as senior goalkeeper Yves Dietrich made four saves on 12 shots, keeping the game tied at zero as regulation would come to a close. However, a goal from Pioneer senior Kosta Kordistos in the 104th minute would be the Leathernecks demise as the match would close with Denver on top 1-0.

In the match, Oscar Ortega's shot on goal would lead the Leatherneck offense, while seven saves from Yves Dietrich anchored the defense.

As the number three seed in the league tournament, Western is slated to open postseason play against Oral Roberts this Thursday (Nov. 13) at CIBER Field in Denver, Colorado, The Summit League announced Saturday (Nov. 8) following the result from Denver. Thursday's kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. (CT).
