Leathernecks Fall to IUPUI in League Action

Team looks to bounce back against Oral Roberts on Sunday

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks returned to the court Friday evening (Oct. 17) to take on the IUPUI Jaguars in league action. The Leathernecks fought hard, but ultimately fell in three sets.

"I think we made too many errors on our side of the net," said head coach April Hall.  "I thought Sam did a good job distributing to the offense the way we talked about in practice all week. We got more hitters involved, but we had too many service errors and serve receive errors, and I think that got us in the end."

IUPUI came out of the gates hot, taking the first set by a 25-17 score. The second set was a different story, as the two teams would fight back and forth, ultimately needing extra points to determine the winner. The Leathernecks built an early 7-3 lead after Samantha Fournier posted a pair of kills, but the set would remain close down to the very end. Facing set point, Fournier recorded a kill to pull the Leathernecks within one. An IUPUI hitting error knotted the score up at 24-all, but the Jaguars would rally to take the set, 26-24.

Coming out of the intermission, the Purple and Gold gave a valiant effort before running out of steam. A hitting error by the Jags kick-started a 4-0 Western run to build a 17-15 lead. Melanie Miller tallied a block, and then recorded kill in the middle of the run, while a kill from Ann Miller on the outside ended the scoring spurt. With the score knotted at 19-all Ann Miller once again recorded a kill, but the Jags would pull away, winning the final six points to secure the match.

Fournier led the way offensively, leading the team in assists (29) and kills (9). Jordan Jackson and Melanie Miller each contributed eight kills, and Molly Murphy once again paced the defense with 19 digs.

Western Illinois returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 19), playing host to Oral Roberts. First serve is set for 2 p.m. inside Western Hall.
