Volleyball Trumps Omaha 3-0 on Saturday

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois volleyball picked up its second sweep of the season over Omaha on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 26) inside Western Hall. The Leathernecks have swept all four opponents that they have played in Macomb, which marks the first time in D1 program history the team has accomplished that feat. 

Western took set one, 25-21, to take the early match lead. The Leathernecks held a 6-1 advantage early in the set and were able to hold off the Mavericks for the duration to go up 1-0. Ann Miller recorded three kills, two blocks and seven digs to lead WIU in the opening set.

The second set was all Western as the Leathernecks won, 25-19, to take the 2-0 match lead. Heather Smith notched six kills at a .417 hitting percentage and also recorded five digs for the Purple & Gold. 

The final set featured eight tie scores and three lead changes, but the Leathernecks held on for the 25-23 victory. Miller and Smith each recorded four kills for the Leathernecks in the final set. Sarah Fetter assisted on 13 kills for Western in the final set. 

Smith led all attackers in the match with 13 kills, while Miller recorded 10 for the Leathernecks. 

Setter Sarah Fetter posted 32 assists in the match, moving her into fourth-place on the career assists list. The Moline, Ill. native now has 2,966 career assists in her Leatherneck career. 

Defensively, four Leathernecks recorded 10 or more digs in the match. Smith and Fetter each notched 11, while Miller and Molly Murphy each had 10.

The Leathernecks are now 10-13 on the year and 4-4 in league play. Omaha falls to 6-17 on the season and 1-7 in conference play. 

Western will continue play at home next weekend with a pair of matches inside Western Hall. The Leathernecks play host to Fort Wayne on Friday (Nov. 1) and IUPUI on Sunday (Nov. 3).
