VERMILLION, S.D. - Western Illinois volleyball fell to conference leading South Dakota, 3-0, in the team's weekend opener on Friday (Oct. 18) in Vermillion. Western falls to 9-12 overall after the match and 3-3 in league play. USD remains perfect with a 6-0 mark in conference play and 15-6 record overall.
The Coyotes took the opening set, 25-20, to take the early lead in the match. Sarah Fetter posted 11 assists for the Purple & Gold in the opening set, while Jordan Jackson recorded four kills and a block.
The Leathernecks started off strong in set two, jumping out to an 8-4 lead early on. The Coyotes fought back however, using a pair of four-point runs and a five-point run late to take the set, 25-12. Ann Miller notched three kills to lead Western in the set.
The third and final set saw tight action before USD used a three-point run midway through to widen the lead and take the set, 25-20.
Miller led the Leathernecks with 12 kills, while Jackson recorded seven kills at a .417 hitting percentage.
Fetter recorded 26 assists in the match to go along with six digs. Kaitlynn Novak and Miller also posted six digs for the Leathernecks.
The Leathernecks will continue their conference road trip with a match against conference newcomer Denver on Sunday (Oct. 20). The match is slated to begin at 3 p.m. CT inside Hamilton Gymnasium in Denver.
