Women's Tennis Falls to UMKC and South Dakota

 

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Western Illinois women's tennis squad (0-9, 0-3 Summit League) dropped a pair of conference matches Friday (March 16) on the second day of competition at Bally's Resort. The Fighting Leathernecks fell 7-0 to UMKC in the morning before dropping a 7-0 decision to South Dakota in the afternoon.

The Leathernecks return to action with a string of home matches beginning on Saturday (March 31) at 3:30 p.m. against Northern Illinois. Western Illinois takes on Bradley at 3 p.m. on Sunday (April 1) and Monmouth College at 4 p.m. on Monday (April 2).

UMKC 7, Western Illinois 0

Western Illinois opened the second day of competition in Las Vegas with a 7-0 loss to UMKC. The Kangaroos were guaranteed two points in singles play as the Fighting Leathernecks had five players to start the contest and Ashley Rettger retired at No. 1 singles due to injury.

Jessica Callahan (No. 2 singles) and Megan Pazdernick (No. 4 singles) were swept 6-0, 6-0 while Jessica Theobald dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 3 singles. Juliette Schwartz performed the best in singles play as she fell 6-1, 6-1 to Madeline Schulte at the No. 5 position.

At No. 1 doubles, Callahan and Rettger dropped an 8-1 decision to Eva Dalvai and Laura Bouet while Pazdernick and Schwartz fell by the same score at the No. 2 position. Schulte and Gabriela Pintos won by default at No. 3 doubles.

South Dakota 7, Western Illinois 0

In the second match of the day against South Dakota, Western Illinois was defeated 7-0. The loss brings their overall record to 0-9 and 0-3 in Summit League play.

Schwartz was the only Leatherneck to score a point in singles play. She ultimately dropped her match 6-1, 6-0. South Dakota recorded shut out victories in No. 1 through No. 4 singles and won at No. 6 singles by default.

In doubles play, No. 1 duo of Callahan and Rettger and No. 2 pair of Pazdernick and Schwartz both fell 8-1. South Dakota took No. 3 doubles by default.
