FLOSSMOOR, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's tennis captured six games Saturday in a 7-0 loss to Valparaiso at the Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet Club.
The Crusaders (3-3) jumped out to a quick start against the Fighting Leathernecks (0-5) and won all three doubles contests. Megan Pazdernick and Juliette Schwartz won one game against Stephanie York and Kaitlyn Hamel at the No. 2 spot while Aubree Zdanovec and Michele Fredlake defeated Jessica Theobald and Jade Romero by the same score. Megan Barthels and Kristin Zakiewicz shut out Jessica Callahan and Ashley Rettger at the top of the lineup.
Rettger fought hard at the top singles flight as she took three games from Bartels (6-1, 6-2) while Theobald won one game over Fredlake (6-0, 6-1) at No. 4 singles. In singles play, four of the matches were 6-0, 6-0 Valpo wins. Hamel downed Callahan at the No. 2 slot while York was a shutout winner against Pazdernick at third singles. At No. 5 singles, Zakiewicz shut out Schwartz while Lauren Kammerer also won 6-0, 6-0 against Romero at the sixth spot.
The Western Illinois tennis programs are hosting an Alumni Reunion next Saturday (March 3) at the Midtown Athletic Club in Chicago. For a fee of ten dollars, former Fighting Leathernecks can partake in the social while watching the men's and women's tennis teams compete against Roosevelt.
"Having an Alumni Reunion was one of my goals when I started here," said second year head coach Chris Kane. "Leathernecks past and present are all part of our program. They are welcome at our events, competitions and in my office any time."
The social begins at 5 p.m. and continues until 8 p.m. while the dual matches are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Food, water and soda will be provided and a cash bar will be available.
