GREEN BAY, Wis. - Western Illinois (6-2) women's soccer started a four-game road trip on Sunday afternoon against the Green Bay Phoenix (2-7-2). The Fighting Leathernecks improved to 5-1 in its last six games with the 1-0 victory on Sunday.
Miranda Graham scored from close range in the 20th minute off of a rebound after Green Bay's goalkeeper Maddie Drusch saved a Kellie Julius shot.
The first half ended with Western holding an advantage in shots, 4-1, and shots on goal, 6-5.
First half header attempts by the Leathernecks nearly gave Western two more goals. The first by Gina Scaffidi in the 10th minute forced Drusch to make an early save. Katie Condon had the second after a Trisha Quinn corner kick in the 27th minute.
Green Bay applied some offensive pressure with two shots on goal in the 60th minute; Victoria Kappel saved both.
Western had several more scoring opportunities in the second half but the one goal would be all the Leathernecks would need.
Kappel made four saves and earned her fourth shutout of her freshman season.
The Purple & Gold will return to Wisconsin for match with Milwaukee on Friday at 7 p.m.
