Leathernecks Look Sharp in Victory Over DePaul

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

PRINTABLE BOX SCORE

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois (3-3-1) was firing on all cylinders on Saturday afternoon and defeated DePaul (1-4-1), 4-0 at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

"Our passing and off-the-ball running was outstanding today," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "We really caught them off guard with the first goal and that was just Nathan (Bruinsma) sprinting 60 yards to take advantage of a terrific passes from Alexis (Dominguez) and Husref (Jupic). That run by Bruinsma opened up the game for us. Sharing the ball and solid off-the-ball-running is really key for us going forward."

The Fighting Leathernecks were on the offensive all day and started the scoring in the 23rd minute. Nathan Bruinsma was on the receiving end of a fast break that was started by Alexis Dominguez who then found Husref Jupic and Jupic left it for Bruinsma and he finished far post.

Charlie Bales was given a free kick jut inside the midline after a Blue Demon foul in the 43rd minute. Bales made the visitors pay with a perfect set piece into the box where Kooten Johnson settled and scored from five yards.

The two teams went into the break with Western having applied all the pressure in the first half. The Purple & Gold outshot DePaul 11-5 and earned four corners to the Blue Demons' three. Western found its rhythm again in the 78th minute when Bales and Mariano Leo combined to find Jupic who finished from five yards.

Dominguez added another assist to his performance when he found Aaron Appel on a cross and Appel finished from 10 yards in the 81st minute. Andy Ryan improves to 3-2-1 and collected three saves to shutout the Blue Demons.

The Leathernecks will stay in Macomb as Bradley visits on Friday for a 4:30 p.m. clash at MacKenzie Alumni Field.
