SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Western Illinois Women's Tennis team picked up its first Summit League victory over the weekend in a four-match conference cluster.
The Fighting Leathernecks (3-18, 1-7) dropped a 4-0 decision to IPFW on Thursday, April 14 but rebounded with a 4-0 win over Centenary in their second match on Friday, April 15.
Western Illinois dropped just two sets against the Ladies on Friday as Jill Furlong and Melissa Kaufmann both won in straight sets (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Marcela Brandao picked up a win (6-0, 6-1) at No. 1 singles and teamed up with Furlong to grab a win (8-0) at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles team of Claire Griffin/Amy Unzicker also won its match (8-1) against Centenary.
The Leathernecks dropped their first match on Friday in a tight battle with South Dakota State. Western Illinois won three of six singles matches, but the Jackrabbits were able to come up with the winning point in doubles play.
Western Illinois wrapped up the weekend with a 4-0 loss to IUPUI on Saturday in its final league match of the season. The Leathernecks will finish off the 2011 campaign with a 4 p.m. match against Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday, April 19.
