PEORIA, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team (1-11) dropped its match with in-state rival Bradley 7-0 Saturday (March 26) at the Clubs at River City.

Sophomores Marcela Brandao and Jill Furlong battled tough in both doubles and singles play. The duo gave Nicole Miller and Adele Henke all they could handle but ultimately fell 9-7 at No. 1 doubles.

Claire Griffin and Amy Unzicker picked up a win in No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-5 to give the Leathernecks their only match win of the day.

In singles action, both Brandao (No. 1) and Furlong (No. 2) won the first set 6-4 and forced third-set tiebreakers. Brandao dropped the second set 6-4 and then fell 14-12 in the third set. Furlong lost the second set, 6-2, and then fell in the third set by a score of 10-5.

At No. 4 singles, junior Claire Griffin played long into the first set with Meredith McDonagh but eventually fell by a 7-6, 6-1 score. Meanwhile, junior Amy Unzicker fell 6-1, 7-6 at the No. 3 position. Griffin and Unzicker also teamed up at No. 2 doubles and dropped an 8-5 decision.

Senior Melissa Kaufmann (6-1, 6-0) and freshman Kara Chicoine (6-0, 6-2) fell in straight sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively. Kaufmann and Chicoine also played at No. 3 doubles for the sixth time this season and dropped an 8-0 decision.

Western Illinois starts Summit League action on Thursday (March 31) when the Fighting Leathernecks take on the Golden Eagles of Oral Roberts. The match will be played in Kansas City, Mo. and is set to begin at 9 a.m. CST.
