MACOMB, Ill. - The
Western Illinois women's tennis squad hosts SIU-Edwardsville Sunday for the
2011 home opener. The match is scheduled to begin at noon on The
Varsity Courts in Macomb.
The
Fighting Leathernecks (1-9) dropped matches to Marist (March 13) and Quinnipiac
(March 14) in Orlando, Fla. on their Spring Break trip. Against Quinnipiac, the
No. 2 doubles team of juniors Claire Griffin and Amy Unzicker picked up its
team-high second victory of the season with an 8-6 decision over Adrienne
Markison and Lisanne Steinert.
SIUE (3-6) was swept 7-0 in its Spring Break
trip finale at Florida Atlantic Wednesday. The Cougars defeated Lehigh, 4-3, on
Tuesday and finished the trip to Florida with a 1-2 record. Junior Maggie
Boeckman leads the Cougars with a 4-5 singles record and five doubles wins.
Western
Illinois defeated host SIUE, 4-3, in the last meeting between the two programs
on Feb. 20, 2010. The Cougars captured the doubles point but the Fighting
Leathernecks received singles wins from Marcela Brandao (No.
1), Stephanie Baumer (No. 2), Amy Unzicker (No. 3)
and Kate Kennedy (No. 4) to pick up their first
victory of the 2010 season.
