Crossbar the Enemy as Western Illinois Drops Summit League Match

MACOMB, Ill. - Family Weekend opened with Western Illinois (7-10, 1-6) women's soccer hosting IUPUI (3-10-4, 2-4-1). IUPUI scored quickly in each of the periods and went on to earn the 3-1 victory despite the rejuvenated Leatherneck attack.

"Our girls kept on fighting today, which was awesome to see," said assistant coach Mariana Sanchez. "We hit the crossbar a lot and there other shots that I was shocked their keeper got there but she played fantastic."

The visitors got on the board first with a goal in the fifth minute by Taylor Heidorn, as she was able to dribble in front of the net and finish back across the net.

Kellie Julius nearly tied the match with a free-kick opportunity in front of the net that hit the crossbar in the 13th minute.

The crossbar proved to be Western's enemy as Gina Scaffidi also blistered one off the top post in the 34th minute.

The first half ended with IUPUI holding on to the one goal lead and Western holding the advantage in shots 14-10.

A goal one minute into the second stanza would prove to be the deciding goal. Alicia Brock scored from 15 yards and was assisted by Megan Hock.

Kayse Flostrand brought the Purple & Gold back into the game with a header goal after a Kristin Becker assist from the corner in the 78th minute.

The Jaguars sealed the road victory with a goal in the 89th minute as Heidorn collected her second goal, this one after a rebound of her own shot.

Freshman keeper Victoria Kappel made four saves in her 90 minutes and IUPUI's Giselle Guzman was outstanding with 11 saves, several of them of the acrobatic variety.

Western outshot IUPUI 36-16 for the afternoon. The 36 shots ranks third all-time in program history for the Leathernecks.

The Fighting Leathernecks will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 28 as Oakland visits Macomb for a 3 p.m. clash.
