MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois senior midfielder Alexis Dominguez tallied his first goal of the 2011 season Saturday afternoon, giving the Leathernecks a 1-0 overtime victory at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
With the win, the Leathernecks hand IUPUI its first Summit League loss of the season, improving its record to 7-5-1 overall and 2-1 in league-play. IUPUI falls to 4-7-2 overall and 1-1-1 in Summit League matches.
Head coach Dr. Eric Johnson was pleased with his team ability to battle throughout the scoreless regulation.
"The entire team did a good job of continuing to battle this afternoon," said coach Johnson. "IUPUI played a very good, hard fought game. The match became more and more intense as time went on, but our guys stayed persistent and we ended up getting the result we wanted."
Both the first and second halves of the match were hard fought and very physical. The back-and-forth battle continued throughout regulation, and the scoreless match would head to overtime.
The overtime period began much like the rest of the contest, physical. A couple minutes into the overtime period, Leatherneck junior forward Nathan Bruinsma brought the ball down the right-side, centered it to junior midfielder Husref Jupic who put a nice shot on goal. Jaguar goalkeeper Tyler Keever made the save, but Alexis Dominguez was there to blast the ball past Keever for the game-winner.
Western finished the match with 22 shots to IUPUI's 19. Sophomore Charlie Bales led the team with seven shots, four on goal.
IUPUI's Kleever finished with eight saves, while Western goalkeeper Andy Ryan made seven stops on his way to his sixth shutout of the season.
The Leathernecks improve their over series record versus IUPUI to 7-9-1 with the victory.
Western Illinois (7-5-1, 2-1-0) will play host to Oakland next Saturday at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The Summit League contest is schedule to begin at 2:30 p.m.
