Leathernecks Fall 2-1 in Summit League Opener

VERMILLION, S.D. - The Western Illinois women's soccer squad fell to South Dakota on the road in its Summit League opener, 2-1.

With the loss, the Leathernecks drop to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in Summit League play, while the Coyotes improved to 1-7-3 overall and 1-0 in league play with their first victory of the year.

South Dakota jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Jenny Teslow found Erin Bello for the Coyotes first goal of the match.

The Leathernecks recorded five shots in the first half to South Dakota's four, putting three on frame, but were unable to find the back of the net.

15 minutes into the second half, Jordan Spaciel was able to put the ball past SDU's goalkeeper for the game-tying goal, her second goal of the year. Laura Lins earned the helper on the score.

The game wouldn't stay tied long, however. Just a couple minutes later at the 26nd minute mark, Bello recorded her second goal of the game, the game-winner, again setup by Teslow.

South Dakota outshot Western, 11-10 in the match. Seven Leathernecks recorded at least one shot, while the Coyotes were led by Bello's four shots.

Western's Victoria Kappel finished the contest with six saves, while Coyote goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor stopped five shots.

Western will look to rebound Sunday as the Leathernecks continue Summit League play at UMKC. The tilt is slated for a 12 p.m. start.
