MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team played in-state rival Eastern Illinois to a 1-1 draw at John MacKenzie Alumni Field on Sunday, Sept. 19.

The Fighting Leathernecks (3-3-3) used an own-goal by the Panthers (3-5-2) to draw even in the 76th minute to extend their home-unbeaten streak to six matches.

In a match that produced little offense, Eastern Illinois got on the board first when Kristin Germann toe-poked a cross from Ashley Eck into the back of the Leatherneck goal in the 57th minute to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

Western Illinois would draw even nearly 20 minutes later when Kayse Flostrand's shot hit the crossbar before bouncing off the back of an Eastern Illinois defender and landing in the back of the goal.

Neither team could produce a game-winner in overtime as the teams combined for just four shots in two overtime periods. The Leathernecks dominated the first half of play, putting five shots on target, but were unable to score.

Kelly Diershow led Western with four shots on the day while Katie Condon, Abby Davis and Ali Smyth each took two. Jenny Green and Jennika Myers each recorded a shot on goal. Laura Atkinson (2-2-3) made four stops in the contest.

Western Illinois outshot Eastern by a 19 to ten margin, including six to five in shots on goal. The Leathernecks were awarded five corners to the Panthers' three.

Caitlin Barrett was honored before the match as the recipient of this year's Cathy Early Scholarship Award. The scholarship is given annually to a Western Illinois female student-athlete who exhibits excellen both on and off the field of play.

The Leathernecks will be off until Wednesday, Sept. 29 when they travel to Northern Iowa for a 7 p.m. match in Cedar Falls.
