INDIANAPOLIS - Rebecca
Henricson's floater in the lane with 41 seconds remaining lifted Western
Illinois to a thrilling 51-50 win over IUPUI on Friday, Dec. 31 at The Jungle.
The Fighting Leathernecks (4-9, 2-1 Summit) trailed for
almost the entire second half before fighting back to earn their second Summit
League victory in the final game of 2010.
Western Illinois jumped out to an early lead in the first
half and led by as many as six points after Brittany Demery hit two free throws
with 14:58 to go in the first frame.
IUPUI (3-9, 1-2) would storm back thanks to the hot shooting
of Shea Collins, who finished with a game-high 24 points and was 7-for-14 from
beyond the arc.
The Jaguars took their first lead of the game when Jasmine
Horne hit a jumper in the closing seconds of the first half and entered the
break with a 21-20 lead.
IUPUI would extend its lead to 36-30 midway through the
second half, but the Leathernecks would keep the game close by shooting a
blistering 59.1 percent (13-for-22) in the second stanza.
With just over a minute remaining, Demery hit two free
throws to pull Western within one at 50-49 before Henricson slashed through the
lane and hit what proved to be the game-winner.
The Leatherneck defense would hold the Jaguars without a
shot over the final 41 seconds to close the game out.
Demery finished with a career-high 15 points and was 7-for-9
from the charity stripe. Webb netted 10 points and grabbed four boards.
Western Illinois finished with a 30-27 edge in rebounds and
shot 48.7 percent (19-for-39) from the floor while holding the Jaguars to 39.6
percent (19-for-48).
The Leathernecks will return to action on Jan. 8 at Oakland
before traveling to IPFW for a Jan. 10 match up.
