Leathernecks resume league play at IUPUI

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois women's basketball team will return to Summit League action when it travels to IUPUI for its final game of 2010 at 2 p.m. (CST) on Friday.

The Fighting Leathernecks are looking to rebound after a 76-44 loss at Purdue in their last outing. Western Illinois has won three-straight meetings over the Jaguars.

Previously at Purdue: Western Illinois was able to tie the game three times in the first half, but Purdue used a 12-2 run to close out the half en route to a 76-44 win over Western... the Leathernecks fell to 0-7 all-time against the Boilermakers... each Leatherneck scored at least two points... Western Illinois forced 22 Purdue turnovers... the Leathernecks were 0-for-10 from beyond the arc in the second half but did finish 8-for-9 from the charity stripe in the contest.

Last Time Out Against IUPUI: Western Illinois picked up a 61-50 win over the Jaguars when the teams last met on Feb. 6, 2010 in Macomb... Western swept the season-series last year, winning 52-44 in Indianapolis on Jan. 9... Jackie Barton scored a career-high 15 points in the contest and was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc... Jordon O'Brien also chipped in with 10 points... Kerah Nelson scored 20 for the Jaguars but was the only IUPUI player to score more than six points in the game.

The Series: Western Illinois holds a 21-7 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams... the Leathernecks dominated the series from 2002-07, winning 11-straight contests... the teams have each won four games since Western's winning streak ended but the Leatherneck's have won the past three meetings.

Scouting the Jaguars: IUPUI enters Friday's game looking to snap a two-game losing streak... the Jaguars fell to Savannah State, 69-52, in their last outing and lost to St. Francis (NY) on Dec. 12... those losses snapped a two-game winning streak during which IUPUI defeated Southern Illinois and Centenary... IUPUI's only other victory came against IU-Southeast on Nov. 23... IUPUI has dropped the past three contests with Western Illinois... Kerah Nelson leads the Jaguar with 10.9 points per game and ranks second on the team with 6.8 rebounds per game.

Leathernecks Picked Seventh in Summit League: Western Illinois was picked seventh in the 2010-11 Summit League preseason poll... the Leathernecks return six players from last year's squad... Western tied Southern Utah for seventh place with 162 points in the poll... Oral Roberts was picked first with 438 points and 26 first place votes... South Dakota State was selected second with 393 points and four first place votes... Oakland (336 points), IPFW (285) and North Dakota State (274) rounded out the top five... UMKC was picked sixth with 253 votes... IUPUI and Centenary were selected ninth and tenth, respectively.

Record Watch: Steals: Anne Borgertpoepping finished last season with 64 steals... she has added 17 steals this season... Borgertpoepping has recorded 108 steals while at Western Illinois... she needs 29 more steals this season to move in to a tie for 9th place in program history for career-steals.

Henricson Starts Again: Rebecca Henricson got her fourth-straight start against Purdue on Tuesday... Henricson played 19 minutes and tied a career-high with three assists... she also scored four points and recorded a steal... she has appeared in every contest and started four games... her first career-start came on Dec. 11 against William Woods.

What a Game: Western's 83-35 win over Judson was big on several fronts for the Leathernecks... the 83 points scored were the most the team has recorded since an 83-37 win over Centenary on Dec. 31, 2005... the 29 turnovers by the Eagles were the most that the Leathernecks have forced since Illinois-Springfield turned the ball over 30 times on Dec. 12, 2006... Judson's 35 points were the lowest total for a Western Illinois opponent since a 60-32 win over Centenary on Feb. 5, 2007...  the 32 free-throw attempts by the Leathernecks were the most since the team shot 33 against Centenary on Feb. 14, 2009.

Borgertpoepping Returns: Anne Borgertpoepping returned to action at Loyola after missing two games with an injury... although she did not score, Borgertpoepping came off the bench to play 13 minutes... she grabbed two boards and dished out two assists... Borgertpoepping entered the season as the team's leader in career-games played and career-starts... she came off the bench again and played 21 minutes at Purdue... Borgertpoepping recorded two points and two rebounds while adding a steal and an assist against the Boilermakers.

Rieger Leads Offense: Jackie Rieger led Western Illinois in scoring for the second-straight game with nine points against Purdue... she previously led the Leathernecks with 12 points and seven rebounds at Loyola on Dec. 22... Rieger has recorded four double-digit scoring outputs in her career, three of which have come this season... she set a career-high with 15 points against Oral Roberts on Dec. 2.

Turnover Parade: The Leatherneck defense has caused all kinds of headaches for opponents this season... entering Friday's game at IUPUI, Western Illinois has forced 20 or more turnovers in eight games this season... the Leathernecks forced 20 or more turnovers just 11 times last season.

New Look Summit League Coming: The 2010-11 look of the Summit League basketball standings will soon be changing... This season marks the finale for Centenary in the league... Southern Utah announced it is leaving for the Big Sky Conference in July 2012... In return, the University of South Dakota will officially join the Summit League next
academic year in all sports.

Up Next: Western Illinois will complete a a five-game road trip with games at Oakland (Jan. 8) an
d IPFW (Jan. 10)... the team will return home for league match ups against North Dakota State (Jan. 15) and South Dakota State (Jan. 17).
