Western Illinois continues Summit League play at Centenary

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois men's soccer team will return to Summit League action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it heads south to Shreveport, La. for a match against Centenary.

The Fighting Leathernecks (2-5-2) are coming off a 3-2 loss to Drake in their last outing. Western will look to snap a two-match losing streak this weekend against Centenary. Western Illinois has never lost in the series history between the two teams.

The Gents (0-4-1) enter the weekend looking for their first win of the season after playing Oral Roberts to a 1-1 draw in their Summit League opener last weekend. Centenary has not won a regular-season match since a 3-1 victory over Houston Baptist on Oct. 7, 2009.

Western picked up a 2-1 win in Macomb last year. Husref Jupic and Nathan Sanchez netted the goals for the Leathernecks, who did not allow a goal until the 90th minute and outshot the Gents by a 23 to seven margin.

Spreading the Wealth
Western Illinois has seen eight different players score a goal so far this season. The Leathernecks have tallied nine goals on the year with two coming off the foot of Jupic.

The Leathernecks have also picked up eight assists as a team this year. Charlie Bales and Daniel Lewis have each recorded two assists while the others have come from four separate players.

Centenary as a Springboard
The Leathernecks used their victory over Centenary last season as a springboard into the second half of their 2009 Summit League Championship season. Western entered the match with a 3-8-0 record before posting a 5-1-2 record to end the season.

The late-season surge earned Western Illinois the No. 2 seed in The Summit League Tournament last year.
