Westerwinds fall to nationally-ranked South Dakota State, 52-31

MACOMB, Ill.  -  Jantine Kraak's career-high 10 points off the bench couldn't propel Western Illinois University past South Dakota State as the Westerwinds fell 52-31 to the 20th-ranked team in the nation.

The Jackrabbits (22-2, 11-1 Summit League) snapped a 20-20 tie by outscoring the Westerwinds (7-16, 5-7 Summit League) 5-0 in the final 1:19 of the first half, and opened the second half with an 7-0 run to stretch their lead to 12, 32-20. SDSU hit eight of its first 10 field goal attempts during the first 10 minutes of the second half to lead by 18, 44-26, with 9:56 remaining. A jumper by Western's Lindsey Wutt at 9:31 was the last field goal the Westerwinds would score. Amanda Walker knocked down a pair of free throws for her only point of the night on the next possession to bring the Westerwinds within 14, but the Jackrabbits put the game out of reach with an 8-0 run the rest of the way. The 21-point margin at 2:54, which proved to be the final score, was the largest advantage of the game.

The Westerwinds held the lead for the first 11 minutes of the game, going up as many as seven, 9-2 at the 13:04 mark. South Dakota State took its first lead with 8:21 remaining, the first of seven lead changes that took place in the first half.

Walker, Western Illinois' leading scorer, was held without a field goal attempt until the 10:41 mark in the second half. Meanwhile, the league's three-time reigning player of the week, Jennifer Warkenthien, was held to six points - 14 below her season average.

Kraak was the game's only player in double figures. The Westerwinds were also helped by Walker's seven points and four assists. Lyndi Thorman added four steals while Jordon O'Brien grabbed seven rebounds and scored eight points.

The Jackrabbits were led by Macie Michelson's eight points and Warkenthien's eight boards.
