CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- Junior Amanda Griffin won both her singles and doubles matches but it wasn't enough as the Western Illinois women's tennis team fell to Northern Iowa, 6-1.
"We lost a tough match today against a good team," said assistant coach Mike Fenwick. "Regardless of what the score shows, what it doesn't show is how hard everyone faught. This should show us what we have to give every match."
The Westerwinds (1-3) began the match by dropping the doubles point to the Panthers. Griffin teamed with senior Zi Wang to pick up their third straight win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Northern Iowa's Diana Mendez and Sampada Kanade, 8-5.
Griffin picked up the only singles win of the day for Western, beating Laia Gonzalez. After a close first set that went to a tiebreaker, Griffin cruised in the second set, winning 7-6 (6), 6-1.
The Westerwinds will pick up play again Saturday, February 21, with a visit to in-state rival Northern Illinois.
