Four Leathernecks earn MVFC All-Academic Team honors

ST. LOUIS  -  Western Illinois juniors Matt Barr and Kyle Glazier highlight the first team of the 2009 Missouri Valley Football Conference all-academic team with Myers Hendrickson and Rick Richardson named to the honorable mention list, Tuesday.

Barr started at quarterback for the first four games of the 2009 season, before suffering a season-ending injury against Southern Illinois. Barr earned nationwide attention as the recipient of the College Sporting News FCS Player of the Week (Sept. 7) after throwing for 437 yards in the season-opening 35-28 win at Sam Houston State (Sept. 3). He completed 18-of-26 passes for three touchdowns in the win, which ranks as the second-best all-time passing game in Western Illinois history. It marked just the 19th time in league history that a quarterback had thrown for 400+ yards and ranked eighth-best in league history for a single game.

Academically, Barr holds a 3.84 GPA in accounting and was a recipient of the prestigious Lincoln Academy Student Laureate Award. He was named to the 2008 CoSIDA academic all-district team and the MVFC all-academic first team in 2008.

Glazier, also an all-conference honoree this season, was the conference leader in tackles per game (10.9) and total tackles (120). His 120 tackles are the most for a Western Illinois player since the 2003 season A linebacker, the Geneseo, Ill., native had seven games with tackle figures in double digits with a career-high 16 stops at Indiana State. Glazier recorded two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and two interceptions on the year with his second straight year as the team's leading tackler.

A law enforcement and justice administration major, Glazier holds a 3.86 GPA and was also named to the 2009 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine academic all-District V first team earlier this season.

Sophomore wide receiver Hendrickson earned honorable mention honors after earning a 3.87 GPA in pre-business supply chain management. Hendrickson appeared in all 11 games on special teams and as a backup wide receiver in the 2009 season.

Sophomore fullback Richardson, also on the honorable mention team, holds a 3.80 GPA in law enforcement and justice administration. Richardson started five games and appeared in all 11 with three receptions for 12 yards. He was an instrumental blocker for Dre Gibbs' 1,000-yard rushing season.

Forty-three student-athletes earned all-academic team honors as voted on by league sports information directors. Voting was done by designating 11 players for first-team honors and 11 players for second-team honors. Nominees had to be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (4.0 scale). Student-athletes must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing at their institutions (freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at their institution.
