NORMAL, Ill.- The Western Illinois women's soccer team played 110 minutes of soccer which resulted in a 1-1 tie against in-state rival Illinois State at Adelaide Street Field.

"Any time that you can get a tie on the road against a good team is a positive thing," stated Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. "We've played three games in a row now without a loss and we'll look to continue that momentum."

The Redbirds (3-5-1) scored first and early as junior Danielle Mutters scored off a high corner kick taken by fellow junior Raquel Rattray.

The Westerwinds (2-2-2) were able to pull even with the Illinois State in the 13th minute of the game when sophomore Jill Kevorkian (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) scored an unassisted goal from 12 yards out on the left side. The score was Kevorkian's first goal of the year and the second in her career.

"I'm proud of the team for coming right back and scoring to tie the game up," Guinn said. "Anytime a team scored early it can be tough on the opposition. We handled it very well."

Western had two chances to take the win before the end of the second half when freshman Kelsey Pillsbury (Chatham, Ill./Glenwood) hit the post in the 83rd minute. Sophomore Jennifer Green (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) followed that up by hitting the crossbar two minutes later.

The Westerwinds were able to hang tough despite being outshot by Illinois State 27-5. Sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Tyk made five saves and only allowed the one goal in 110 minutes in goal.

"You don't want to see that many shots against your goal," said Guinn. "The defense was able to handle the pressure well and Tyk played great in goal."

Western returns home for match against another in-state rival, Eastern Illinois, Sunday, Sep. 21, at 2 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
