FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The Western Illinois women's tennis team clinched its second straight berth to The Summit League championships with a 5-0 victory over Oakland at the Wildwood Racquet Club.

"It feels good to clich a spot, but this team has one goal and that's winning a title," said Western Illinois head coach Michael Hunt. "We're going to go out there tomorrow and lay it all on the line and see where it takes us."

The Westerwinds (11-9, 5-1 The Summit League) took the doubles point from the Golden Grizzlies (6-12, 3-4 The Summit League) after recording wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Amanda Griffin and junior Zi Wang had a strong performance at the No. 1 doubles spot, defeating Lindsay Grimmer and Michelle Maxfield, 8-3. Junior Kim Lennartsson and sophomore Yana Meinert pulled out a close 9-7 match at the No. 2 doubles position against Amanda Scheer and Gabrielle Gogas.

Griffin continued her strong play in singles, defeating Grimmer, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 1 singles position. Lennartsson and Meinert each added their second win of the match after Lennartsson defeated Scheer, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2 singles and Meinert beat Jackie Dinicu at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-2. Also winning for Western was sophomore Ashley Clark, who was victorious at No. 4 singles, beating Lisa Lulgjuraj, 6-1, 6-0.

Western began The Summit League cluster with a 4-0 win over South Dakota State, Friday, April 18.

Griffin and Wang won at No. 2 doubles against Kate and Emma Wylie, 8-0, while freshman Kate Kennedy and Clark beat Carrie Jansen and Nellie Bloomberg, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles in order to win the doubles point for the Westerwinds.

Kennedy and sophomore Stephanie Baumer recorded singles wins without giving up a game, beating Caitlin Brannen and Bloomberg, respectively. Also winning for Western was sophomore Courtney Brooks, who beat Amy Sanborn, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 6 singles spot.

The Westerwinds will play two matches tomorrow in Fort Wayne, Ind., against defending conference champs Oral Roberts at 9 a.m., and host IPFW at 2 p.m.
