CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa- The Western Illinois women's tennis team picked up their first win of the season while splitting a pair of matches against Iowa State and Creighton
The Westerwinds (1-3) defeated the Blue Jays, Saturday, February 9, by a score of 5-2, revenging a 6-1 loss to Creighton in 2007.
Western opened the match against the Blue Jays winning the doubles point after picking up wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Junior Kim Lennartsson (Kungsbacka, Sweden/Katrine Lund Gymnasium/Southern Mississippi) and sophomore Amanda Griffin (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay/Fresno State) teamed together to defeat Lauren Mastro and Lindsey Erickson, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles, while freshman Kate Kennedy (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) and sophomore Stephanie Baumer (Troy, Ill./Triad) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-3.
The Westerwinds received singles win from Griffin at No.1, sophomore Ashley Clark (Waseca, Minn./Waseca/Wisconsin-Milwaukee) at No. 3, Kennedy at No. 4, and sophomore Yana Meinert (Joliet, Ill./Township). Kennedy's win at No. 4 singles was her first collegiate victory.
Western dropped the weekend opener Friday, February 8, at Iowa State, 5-2.The Westerwinds recorded their two singles victories from Lennartsson and Clark.
Lennartsson defeated Iowa State's Alyssa Palen, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, to pick up her first singles victory on the young season. Clark won her second match in a row at the No. 3 singles position, defeating Chrissy Derouin in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
"I was very pleased with the effort that we had against Iowa State," stated Western Illinois assistant coach Lica Lucas. "You have to be pleased about anytime that you play well against a Big 12 team. It'll really help us later on in the season."
