WICHITA, Kan.- The Western Illinois women's basketball team couldn't overcome Wichita State shooting 56.0 percent in the second half as they fell in a non-conference game to the Shockers, 65-46, at the Charles Koch Arena.
After a basket by senior
Amanda Walker to start the scoring in the second half pulled the Westerwinds (2-9) within four points of Wichita State (7-3) at 32-28, the Shockers went on a 19-6 run to extend their lead to 16 points with 12 minutes remaining in the game.
A three-pointer from Marisah Henderson with 3:39 left on the clock gave Wichita State its largest lead in the game of 24 points at 63-39. A lay-up from
Rasheena Salter finished the scoring for the game, pulling Western within 19 as time ran off the clock.
Jacie Hoyt hit a shot behind the three-point line, which was followed by a lay-up by Marcy Sudbeck that gave the Shockers an early 5-0 lead with 17:16 left in the opening half. A
Nicole Myers lay-up finally put the Westerwinds on the board at the 17 minute mark.
Back-to-back buckets by juniors
Jordon O'Brien and
Katy Clark gave Western its first lead of the game at 8-7 with 13:27 left in the opening half. A lay-up from Daria Frazier took the lead back for Wichita State. A three-pointer from
Anneloes Kodde regained the lead for the Westerwinds with 10:22 left in the first half.
The Shockers would take the lead by three before back-to-back lay-ups from Clark and Myers gave the Westerwinds another one-point lead, 20-19, with 6:20 left on the clock. Wichita State finished the first half with a 13-6 run, capped off by four straight points from Daria Fraizer to send the Westerwinds into the locker room trailing 32-26 at the half.
Myers led the Westerwinds (2-9) in scoring with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting from floor. Walker chipped in with seven points, while Clark and O'Brien each contributed six points. Sophomore
Ashley Lord pulled down a team-high 15 rebounds in her first action in a Western uniform.
Frazier scored a game-high 18 points for the Shockers (7-3), while also pulling down a team-high eight boards. Henderson recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists.
Western shot 36.8 percent (21-57) from the floor, while Wichita State shot 47.4 percent (27-57), including 56 percent in the second half (14-25).
The Westerwinds are off for Christmas and return to play with a trip to Fayettesville, Ark., for a match-up against SEC member Arkansas Monday, December 29. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

-This was the first game all season in which the Westerwinds didn't have a player in double digits scoring.
