Westerwinds wrap up season with 3-2 win

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois women's soccer team wrapped up the 2008 season with its 10th straight home conference victory with a 3-2 win over North Dakota State at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

"I think we're one of the hottest teams in the conference right now," said Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. "We've outscored our opponents 10-3 in our last three games. It's just too bad that we weren't playing this well earlier in the season so that our season could have continued next weekend."

Junior Keeley Murray (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 82nd minute of the game off an assist from senior Kim Schuneman (Wauwatosa, Wis./West).

The Bison (5-12-2, 2-5-1) got a late goal in the 88th minute of the game from Laura Murphy, but were unable to get the tying goal.

The Westerwinds (8-8-2, 4-4-0) got on the board first in the 33rd minute of the game when senior Ashley Hoch (Brookfield, Wis./Central) sent a cross from the right side of the goal, which Schuneman headed into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. It was Hoch's eighth assist of the season and her 22nd point of the 2008 campaign which is the second highest single-season total in school history.

"It was like a dream to score a goal in the final game of your career," stated Schuneman. "It was even better that the assist came from a fellow senior that I have been playing with since I was 13."

Just over four minutes later, freshman Nora Potempa (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) unloaded a shot that got past North Dakota State goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch to put Western up 2-0. Fellow freshman Alyssa Johnston picked up the assist on the play.

Michelle Gaffaney cut the Westerwinds' lead in half when she scored on a header in the 66th minute. She scored on a header off of Aubrey Bot's free kick service.

Sophomore Jessica Walsh (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) recorded two saves in her fifth win of the season.

The game mark the end in the college career of six Westerwind seniors, which include: Lainey Bruhn, Hoch, Schuneman, Paige Stark and Katelyn Wisner.

"It's huge to end our season on a win," Wisner said. "We would have love to be in the conference tournament, but the last couple of years when we were, our season ended on a loss. We got to end our note on a high note playing the best soccer we had all season. To end our college careers on a win is a even higher note."
