Westerwinds drop double overtime decision at Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa- The Western Illinois women's soccer team concluded a four-game road trip by playing extra time Sunday but gave up a goal five minutes into double overtime to fall in defeat to Drake, 1-0, at Cownie Soccer Complex.

"We hit the cross bar and hit a short shot right at the keeper in overtime," said Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. "We had our opportunities but couldn't catch a break. It's disappointing cause we played pretty hard."

The Westerwinds (4-5-2) had a great opportunity to win the game in the first overtime when senior Ashley Hoch had a open shot from five yards out but the shot was denied from goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder.

Drake (3-7-1) finally broke the scoreless tie against Western in the 105th minute of the game when the Bulldogs' Lauren Berner and Danielle Figliola worked together for a give and go and Berner beat Westerwinds's sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Walsh to the left center of the goal.

Schroeder made eight saves in the shutout win for Drake, picking up her third win of the season. Walsh made 12 saves in just over 59 minutes of play in the losing effort.

Western returns home for its conference home opener against IPFW Friday, Oct. 10 at 4 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
