Leathernecks defeat Central Arkansas, 1-0

Conway, Ark.  - Senior Jona Andrade (Miami, Fla./Sunset Senior) scored the only goal in the match for Western Illinois as they defeated Central Arkansas, 1-0, at Farris Field.

"We showed a lot of resiliency in the match," said Western Illinois head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "Our defense is getting better and better every time we play. The midfield did well winning a lot of second ball's and creating a lot chances for us to score."

The only goal in the match would come in the 30th minute when sophomore Chris Russo (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) got his own rebound off a shot and passed the ball to teammate Andrade who found the back of the net for the fifth time this season, recording his fourth game-winning goal on the year.

The Leatherneck (11-4-2, 2-2-0 Summit League) defense held the Central Arkansas (2-11-1) offense to only eight shots, two of which came in the second half. Western took a total of 16 shots from nine different players.

Sophomore Andrew Ryan (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Rolling Meadows) got the start in the net for the Leathernecks and made three saves and recorded the shutout.

"We had a good defensive effort from our back four today in (Kevin) Ross, (Nikola) Katic, (Luke) Greenwell and (Jeff) Schield," said Johnson. "Andrew Ryan played well also as he got the shutout for us in the net."

The Leathernecks will return home for their final two matches of the season against conference foes IPFW and Oral Roberts. Western will face IPFW on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 2:30 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's soccer match at noon.
