CHARLESTON, Ill.- Western Illinois women's soccer team received a goal in the last minute of regulation from junior
Aimee St. Andre to tie Eastern Illinois 2-2 in double overtime.
St. Andre (Pekin, Ill./Pekin Community [Illinois Central]) received a cross from sophomore
Keeley Murray (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) and headed a shot from point blank past Panthers' keeper Kaylin Lorbert. St. Andre's first career goal at Western Illinois tied the game 2-2 with 45 seconds remaining on the clock.
“It was a great serve in by
Keeley Murray and a great header by Aimee (St. Andre),” stated head coach Tony Guinn. “It had to be one of our better goals of the year.”
The Westerwinds (5-1-1) got on the board early in the game when senior
Bess Rapp (Lincoln, Neb/Southeast) scored off of Murray's first assist of the game. Murray served a cross over the out-stretched hands of Lorbert and Rapp was able to find the back of the net. Rapp's third goal of the season gave Western a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game.
Eastern Illinois (3-3-1) tied the game up in the 28th minute when Rachel Hamilton received a rebound and unloaded a shot from 12 yards out and past sophomore keeper
Meghan Tyk (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish).
The Panthers took the lead in the 34th minute when Alexis Miller's corner kick found Kathleen Hayes on the far post who was able to head the ball into the back of the net.
Senior
Julie Remes (Arden Hills, Minn./Totino Grace) took over for Tyk in the second half and held the Panthers scoreless for sixty minutes.
“I thought Eastern Illinois played very well,” said Guinn. “Most teams cave in after going down 1-0 early in the game. They bounced back and scored two kick goals. I'm really happy with our team for keeping our composure and tying the game in the last minute. It was a fitting ending that this game would end in overtime. Both teams worked very hard.”
The Westerwinds will be back home Sunday, September 23, to host NAIA William Woods at 1 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
