ROCHESTER, Mich.- Junior
Ashley Hoch scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner with 38 seconds remaining to propel the Western Illinois women's soccer team over Oral Roberts 2-1 in semi-final action at the Summit League Championship at the OU Soccer Complex.
The Westerwinds (16-2-1) defeated Oral Roberts (8-9-3) for the second time in a week, recording a 1-0 victory over the Golden Eagles in the last game of the regular season, November 4 and extending their winning streak to four games.
“Oral Roberts is a very tough team,” said Western Illinois head coach Tony Guinn. “It's very difficult to beat a team twice in back to back games. We tried some new things and they didn't work. We went to something different in the last ten minutes and it paid off.”
With the clock winding down under a minute, the Westerwinds received just their second corner kick of the game. Western was able to take advantage of the opportunity when senior
Bess Rapp (Lincoln, Neb./Southeast) found Hoch (Brookfield, Wis./Central) who headed it in for the game-winning goal with 38 seconds remaining on the clock.
“I knew I had to get up there and get a head on the ball,” stated Hoch. “Bess sent a great ball off the corner and I just wanted to get a head on the ball and try to make something happen.”
“This win was amazing,” said Rapp. “Our goal was to get to the conference championship and we just kept fighting the entire game. It was incredible to score in the last minute to help us reach our goal.”
Western Illinois got on the board first in the 40th minute when Rapp sent a cross into the box. Hoch headed the ball past Oral Roberts keeper Stef Gurley to give the Westerwinds a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles evened the score at 1-1 in the 49th minute. Senior Emily Gagnon unloaded a shot from 15 yards out which snuck by the outstretched hands of Westerwinds' sophomore keeper
Meghan Tyk (Whitefish, Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay).
The defense held tight for Western Illinois despite giving up the goal. The Westerwinds allowed Oral Roberts four shots on goal. Tyk made three saves in her 12th win of the season, which breaks
Samantha Clark's (2006) record for wins in a season.
Western Illinois faces Oakland in the championship game, Sunday, November 11, at 12 p.m.
