Ypsilanti, Mich. - Robyn Ruypers scored her third goal of the year for Western Illinois in 1-0 win against Eastern Michigan, Friday in Ypsilanti, Mich. ?We spent eight hours on a bus and we could have just dragged ourselves off the bus and used that as an excuse to not play well,? said head women?s soccer coach Kevin Sherry. ?We came out ready to play. That really speaks of the character of this team.?Ruypers, a senior from Petrolia, Ontario, scored the lone goal in the 12th minute off a pass from Caitlin Barrett. Her goal moved her into sole possession of second place in career points for Western with 33 total points. She also stands second in career goals scored for WIU with 15. She needs just four goals to tie Amanda Wandtke, a 2001 Western Illinois graduate.?It?s a different Robyn than what has been here in years past,? said Sherry. ?She is so much more confident in her job for us.?The Westerwinds had to depend on defensive efforts from Kim Schuneman, Kelsey Brown, Bess Rapp and goalkeeper Sam Clark.?I just don?t want all of our offensive players getting all the credit,? said Sherry. ?Our defensive players need to get noticed just as much. Without them we wouldn?t have won this game. We really had to hang on to pull this game out.?Clark picked up five saves in the win.The Eagles out shot WIU 15-12. Eastern Michigan put seven shots on goal compared to Western?s five.The win stretches out the best start in school history and ties record win streak of three games.The Westerwinds will travel next to Bowling Green, Ohio to play Bowling Green at noon. If Western can pull off the win it will mark the longest winning streak in the program?s 10-year history.
