MACOMB, Ill. - Ashley Hoch scored the lone goal in 1-0 win for Western Illinois University over Eastern Illinois University to kick off the 2006 Westerwinds soccer season Friday, at MacKenzie Alumni Field. It was great to get the first game because if you don't get that first one, you?re always searching and that puts a lot of pressure on the team,? said Western head coach Kevin Sherry.  This win takes a lot of pressure off our hands.?Hoch, a sophomore form Brookfield, Wis., got a breakaway through the Panther defense after teammate Robyn Ruypers pushed a pass just ahead of Hoch.?If you think about it, this game was decided by a good finish by Ashley,? said Sherry. ?Both teams had opportunities, but the ability to finish was the key. She hit that ball nice and sweet and right into the corner.?Senior Samantha Clark picked up five saves including a gave-saving stop on a one-on-one situation. She also picked up the win. Clark had just received medical clearance this week to play.?That save killed their (Eastern Illinois) momentum,? said Sherry. ?You could see their heads go down and ours go up. We just built off of that and it kept us going. I?ve known Sam for four years now and I had no doubt that she could do that.?Clark transferred to Western from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa where she played for Sherry from 2003 to 2004.Eastern Illinois? keeper, Jenny Williams, also recorded five saves, but took the loss.Both teams kept an even number of shots at 11. Western put one more shot on goal with six compared to Eastern, who took five.Western Illinios moves to 1-0-0 on the year.The Westerwinds play host to Northern Iowa Sunday at Noon.
