Western wins first conference game

MACOMB, Ill. — Misako Inaba scored a goal and recorded one assist in a 2-0 win by the Western Illinois women's soccer over Oral Roberts. It was the first win in Mid-Con play by the Westerwinds.

"Obviously I was very pleased," said Western head coach, Kevin Sherry. "Every player gave 100 percent when called up. We fought for every inch because we knew how important this game was. With a large crowd and the television cameras being there I felt our players handled this pressure 'must win' situation with class and honor. Oral Roberts were a great soccer playing team and we had to work extremely hard to get the result today."

Inaba one touched a ball to Bess Rapp who laced the ball in with her left foot to give Western a 1-0 lead in the 5th minute of the game. Inaba got the one touch because of a pass from Ashley Hoch.

With the dual assist Hoch tied the single season record for assists with her sixth assist. She also tied the career record for assists with her 12th career assist.

Inaba then put the Westerwinds up 2-0 with a free kick from 20 yards out.

Western outshot Oral Roberts 14-9 and put more shots on goal at 8-2.

Samantha Clark picked up two saves in the win moving her record to 8-4-0.

Western (8-6-0, 1-2-0) will play IUPUI in Indianapolis, Ind. Saturday, Oct. 14, at 7:00 p.m.
