MACOMB, Ill. - Junior Jenna Yurs (Elgin, Ill.) had 14 kills and tied her career-high with 11 blocks in Western Illinois? 3-2 win (25-30,21-30,30-19,30-24,15-5) over Oral Roberts (15-13, 7-4). Tonight?s win was the first win in 18 tries for the Westerwinds (11-15, 7-5) against the Golden Eagles and was the first time Western has come back from 2-0 down to win a match since defeating Oakland October 4, 2002. The Westerwinds 11 wins are the most since the 1997 team won 17 matches and the seven conference wins are the most since the 1995 team won seven.?To be down 0-2 is a tough situation and it?s even tougher against Oral Roberts and that makes this win even more amazing,? third-year head coach Kym McKay said. ?Oral Roberts is great volleyball year in and year out and this shows how far our program has come in just a couple of years.?Western Illinois sophomore libero Jennifer Alexander (Sycamore, Ill.) tied her school record with 41 digs and now has 72 digs this week alone and 581 this season. She is poised to become only the 10th player in NCAA history to have more than 600 digs since rally scoring was adopted in 2001.The Westerwinds also received double-doubles from senior Kali Landis (Milledgville, Ill.) with 11 kills and 19 digs and senior setter Lisa Esmond (Utica, Ill.) contributed 44 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Amy Sauerwein (Belleville, Ill.) stepped up defensively with 27 digs in the match while sophomore Patty Melinauskas (Orland Park, Ill.) added 12. Freshman Mary Olson (Elkhart, Ill.) led the Westerwinds with 15 kills in addition to four blocks.Defensively, Western had 15 blocks and held Oral Roberts to a .129 hitting percentage, including .034 in game three and .000 in game five.Western started off slow against the second-place team in the Mid-Con, hitting just .078 and -.082 in games one and two while the Golden Eagles hit .190 and .279 in the two games. The Westerwinds regrouped during the 10-minute break between games two and three and took control of the match. After coming back from 2-0 down to force game five, Western would not allow Oral Roberts back in the game. With the score tied 2-2, Western got a kill from Melinauskas and would not relinquish the lead. The Westerwinds hit .357 in the game with 10 kills and two blocks while holding the Golden Eagles to a .000 hitting percentage.Western started the come back by avoiding the sweep in game three. Oral Roberts took an 8-5 lead early on before Western had its first lead of the entire match after an ORU error gave Western a 10-9. The two teams continued to trade the lead back-and-forth before Western Illinois took the lead for good on another Oral Roberts error to start a 15-4 run and win the game.?After the win in game three the team gained more confidence in our strategy and forced Oral Roberts to play the way we wanted them to play instead of sticking with the strategy that was so successful for them in games one and two,? McKay said. The Westerwinds carried that momentum into game four as they jumped out to an early 10-4 lead. Oral Roberts kept trying to close the gap, but Western responded with key kills from Landis and Yurs who had five and four kills each in the game. The Golden Eagles did get to 26-22 late in the game, but Western held on to force game five and ultimately beat Oral Roberts for the first time in program history.Oral Roberts received 54 digs from senior libero Becky Dreher and 24 kills and 18 digs from sophomore Ori Zuzic. Western Illinois will look to complete a 3-0 week by beating Centenary (6-26, 0-11) tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Brophy Hall.
