Sophomore midfielder Alejandro Pacheco was named the Hampton Inn Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Monday, September 21. Pacheco's honor comes following Western's first victory of the season.
On Saturday, September 19, the Western Illinois men's soccer team picked up a 4-1 victory over Kansas City. With the Leathernecks leading by a slim 2-1 margin in the final minutes, Kansas City was pressing numbers as they looked to get a late equalizer. Pacheco caught the Kangaroos in a counter-attack, and following an assist from his older brother Fernando, Alejando beat the keeper to give Western a 3-1 lead in the 90th minute.
The goal marked the first of the season, and the second in his career, for Pacheco.
A native of La Piedadd, Michoacan, Mexico, Pacheco holds a 3.33 GPA while majoring in pre-business management.
Pacheco and the Leathernecks return to action on Monday, September 21, as the team plays host to Loras College at 5 p.m.
