Shawna Turbyfill joined the Leatherneck athletic training staff in August of 2025. Shawna’s primary sports are volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s track and field.
Before coming to WIU Shawna spent 6 years as the Lead Athletic Trainer at 10th CAB (Combat Aviation Brigade) at Fort Drum, NY. There she worked with the most deployed unit in the U.S. Army taking care of the Chinook, Black Hawk, Shadow (drone) and Apache pilots as well as the mechanics, fuelers, ground crew and air traffic control active-duty service members.
Shawna’s prior Division I Collegiate experience came from Bryant University in Smithfield, RI. While there for 8 years her main sports were men’s basketball, softball and women’s lacrosse. She would also work with football, men’s lacrosse and xc in the fall.
Prior to Bryant, Shawna worked as a DIII athletic trainer for Gwynedd-Mercy College; a second assistant volleyball coach at the University of Pennsylvania, and a massage therapist for the Philadelphia Wings (indoor lacrosse league) and the Kixx (indoor soccer league). She has been a Nationally Board-Certified Massage Therapist for over 22 years and she went to school for that while earning her Associates degree in General Studies from Garrett College, MD. Her Bachelors of Science in Athletic Training was finished at Catawba College, NC which she started at Bridgewater College in Virginia where she played 2 years of volleyball and won a SAAC championship. Finally, she rounded out her academics with a Masters of Education in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Temple University, PA and most recently obtained a certificate in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy.
Shawna resides in Good Hope with her boyfriend and 2 dogs. She enjoys cooking, working out, and spending time outdoors.
