Tyler Howle was named the Leathernecks’ assistant head coach in January 2018, following two seasons on staff. He will work as the team’s co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Under Howle’s direction, center Jacob Judd earned several accolades, including All-Missouri Valley Football Conference, pre-season All-American, Academic All-MVFC and CoSIDA Academic All-District. Western’s offense ended the 2016 season 20th in fewest tackles for a loss allowed and 31st in sacks allowed. The offensive line also helped Western rank 17th in passing offense, 12th in time of possession and 30th in third-down conversions.

Howle spent the previous two years at North Carolina State as a graduate assistant with the offensive line. He worked on film breakdown, defensive scout team preparation and recruiting.

A two-year starter at Penn State and a four-year letter winner along the offensive line, Howle played for the Nittany Lions from 2010-13. He started at center and left guard, and was also a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. He capped his career by receiving the Maginnis Memorial Award, given to the most outstanding senior offensive lineman.

Howle earned a bachelor’s degree from Penn State in kinesiology, then his master’s degree from NC State in liberal studies. He and his wife Karen were married in the summer of 2016 and reside in Macomb.
