Western Illinois Powers Past Tennessee State in Offensive Showcase

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois softball delivered an explosive performance on April 7, 2025, defeating Tennessee State 15–7 at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium in Macomb, Illinois. The Leathernecks showcased dominant offensive firepower, tallying fourteen hits—including four home runs—and capitalizing on ten walks from Tennessee State pitching.

After falling behind 4–1 in the first inning, Western Illinois responded with a massive nine-run second inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Payton Brown. Brown had a career day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three home runs and six RBIs. Brown tied the single game home run record for WIU softball after her performance at the plate today. RyLee German added to the slugfest, blasting a home run and driving in three, while Malia Robertson also collected two RBIs.

Tennessee State jumped out early, fueled by lead off hitter Duke, who reached base four times and scored once. Spencer added a solo home run and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Jean-Baptist knocked in two with a base hit.

On the mound, Western Illinois used a trio of pitchers. Lillie Wools started, allowing three earned runs in one inning. Libby Spaulding and Kathryn McChristy combined for the final four innings, with McChristy settling in to allow just one run over 2.2 innings while striking out two.

For Tennessee State, starter Castillo lasted only 1.2 innings, giving up five earned runs. The bullpen couldn't contain Western Illinois either, with Holder and Salcido combining to allow nine more runs.

The game ended in five innings via run rule, with Western Illinois turning two key double plays and leaving only four runners on base, maximizing nearly every scoring opportunity. The Leathernecks improve with a statement win, fueled by their powerful offense and timely pitching.

The Leathernecks will be continuing OVC play this upcoming weekend starting, April 12-13, at Lindenwood at 12 p.m., 2 p.m. & 12 p.m.
