MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois faced a tough challenge against Drake University on March 25, 2025, falling 14-2 at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. Despite a valiant effort, the Leathernecks were unable to contain Drake's explosive offense, which capitalized on multiple scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Drake took control early, putting up two runs in the first inning before unleashing a five-run rally in the third. Western Illinois managed to respond in the fourth with two runs of their own, thanks to a clutch two-run homer from Sophia Sanchez. However, Drake continued to apply pressure, adding a run in the fifth and erupting for six more in the sixth to seal the game.
Offensively, Western Illinois recorded six hits but struggled to string them together for sustained rallies. Rylee Boone led the way with two hits, providing a spark at the top of the lineup. Sanchez's home run was the highlight of the game for the Leathernecks, but it wasn't enough to overcome Drake's relentless attack.
On the mound, starting pitcher Libby Spaulding battled through three innings but allowed five earned runs before handing the ball to the bullpen. The relief staff faced similar struggles, surrendering a total of 14 runs on 12 hits. Walks and defensive miscues added to Western Illinois' troubles, allowing Drake to take full advantage.
Defensively, the Leathernecks committed one error and allowed three stolen bases, which further complicated their effort to keep the game within reach. Despite some solid plays in the field, the team was unable to slow down a Drake offense that found success both with power and small-ball tactics.
With the loss, Western Illinois falls to 6-22 on the season and will aim to refocus in their next games against UT Martin, as they strive for more consistency on both offense and defense.
