JASPER, IND – The WIU tennis team came out victorious against conference rivals, Southern Indiana, picking up the first conference win of the season.
In doubles play, the Leathernecks won two and dropped one. At the No. 1 the pair of Nour Gueblaoui and Chloé Routier looked promising, but suffered a 2-6 loss. The team of Richardlyne Francois and Mana Fawcett looked unstoppable at No. 2, as they took a 4-1 lead before winning due to a match retirement by their opponents. Paige Grice and Anna Trush played at No. 3 took their opponents to a tie breaker set, etching out the win with a score of 7-6 (7-5). Winning two of the three doubles matches gave WIU the first point of the match.
In singles play, Routier played at No. 1 suffering a 0-6, 3-6 loss. At No. 2, Grice had a back and forth match, but ultimately fell short with a score of 4-6 and 3-6. Francois kept her streak going at No. 3 making quick work of her opponent scoring a 6-1 win in both sets. Fawcett put on a show at No. 4, finishing her match in dominant fashion with a score of 6-1 in both sets.
Gueblaoui bounced back to secure the win for the Leathernecks with a quick 2 set match scoring 6-0 on both sets. Trush won the first set of her match 6-3 but abandoned the match as WIU took home the win with a 4-2 score.
WIU Tennis travels to Cape Girardeau Saturday March 22 to face the SEMO redhawks.
