Western Illinois Falls in Doubleheader Against SEMO
MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois struggled in both games of a doubleheader against SEMO, dropping the first game 16-5 and the second 15-4 at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium on Friday.
In the opener, SEMO's offense erupted for 16 runs on 15 hits, including four home runs. Western Illinois had a promising start, keeping the game close in the early innings, but SEMO's five-run fifth inning put the game out of reach. Kaylee Ketcherside helped the Leathernecks offense with two RBI's, allowing multiple Leathernecks to score. Payton Brown also added two RBI's, but WIU defense struggled to contain SEMO's offense.
The second game saw a similar pattern, as SEMO capitalized on a big third inning, scoring eight runs to take control. The Redhawks added six more in the fourth and one in the fifth to secure the mercy-rule victory. WIU managed five hits, but defensive struggles and an effective SEMO offense proved too much to overcome.
Despite the losses, RyLee German remained a bright spot for WIU, hitting a home run early in the second game. Pitching woes plagued the Leathernecks, as multiple pitchers struggled to contain SEMO's power-heavy lineup.
WIU looks to bounce back in their final match up of the series against SEMO tomorrow at 12 p.m in Macomb, IL.
