MACOMB, IL – Western Illinois was edged by SIUE, 66–61, in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup Monday night at Western Hall.
The Leathernecks took a four-point lead into halftime after holding the Cougars to 24 first-half points, heading to the break up 28–24 behind a strong defensive effort. Western Illinois controlled the tempo early and limited SIUE's scoring opportunities through the opening 20 minutes.
Lucas Lorenzen led Western Illinois with a game-high 19 points, finishing 6-of-14 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 at the free throw line while adding five rebounds in 37 minutes. Isaiah Griffin and Antwaun Massey each scored 11 points, with Massey shooting an efficient 4-of-7 and contributing two assists, two steals, and a block.
SIUE turned the game in the second half, outscoring the Leathernecks 42–33 to take the lead midway through the period. Western Illinois was unable to regain the advantage in the closing minutes, as SIUE closed out the contest to secure the 66–61 win.
Western Illinois will return to action after the new year on January 1, when the Leathernecks travel to face UT Martin.
