MACOMB, Ill- The Western Illinois Men's Basketball team (8-14, 2-9 OVC) couldn't overcome a slow first half, falling 71-59 to Eastern Illinois on Thursday night at Western Hall for their seventh straight loss.
The Leathernecks struggled offensively in the opening period, managing just 19 points as Eastern Illinois built a commanding lead. WIU found its rhythm in the second half, scoring 40 points, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
Ryan Myers, Trey Deveaux, and Massal Diouf led WIU with 14 points apiece, with Diouf adding three blocks. Myers contributed five rebounds and two assists, and Deveaux nearly notched a double-double with nine boards.
Sean Smith scored his 1,000th career point tonight needing one point in the second half to reach 1,000 career points. Smith finished the game with seven points and pulled down four rebounds and became the third Leatherneck this season to score 1,000 career points.
WIU's defense showed moments of strength, blocking five shots and forcing Eastern Illinois into 12 turnovers. However, the Leathernecks' 12 turnovers and struggles from beyond the arc (3-for-15) hindered their comeback bid.
The Leathernecks will attempt to bounce back on Saturday when they host SIUE. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. inside Western Hall.
