Western Takes Loss in Series Finale

The Leathernecks lost 2-10 on Monday in the series finale at UT Martin.

MARTIN, TN - Western Illinois softball finished off its first conference series of the year on Monday, after splitting a Sunday doubleheader with UT Martin. The Leathernecks took a 2-10 loss in Monday's matchup, moving to 10-12 on the season.

WIU freshman catcher Valerie Combs led off the game with a double, but an inning-ending double play saw no runs come across. Western Illinois starter Raven Morrison sat down the Skyhawks in order to start the game, ending a scoreless first inning.

In the second, Maria Luna smashed the ninth pitch of a full count at-bat deep into left-center and over the wall, giving the Leathernecks a 1-0 lead. The home run was Luna's second of the season. UT Martin regained the lead in the bottom half of the second frame, with a two-run homer. After the Western bats went down in order in the third, Martin tacked on two more runs in the frame before moving to the fourth.

Malia Robertson singled and stole second base to start the fourth inning, and after advancing to third on a fly ball, the speedy freshman scored on a wild pitch to make it a 2-4 ballgame. Sadly for the Leathernecks, Robertson's fourth-inning single was their final hit of the game. UT Martin scored a run in the fourth, then four runs in the fifth, and walked it off in the sixth with a solo home run to end the game with a score of 10-2 in favor of the Skyhawks.

Coming up, Western Illinois heads west to Missouri for a Tuesday matchup at Kansas City, then back east to Saint Louis for a Wednesday game with the Billikens. On Saturday, the Leathernecks will open the home season, taking on Tennessee Tech in a three-game series at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.
