Macomb, Ill- Western Illinois football fell at Hanson Field this afternoon by a score of 45-20 in a rainy matchup against Tennessee State. TSU would set the tone with an early touchdown, scoring on a 15-yard rush. Later in the quarter, the Tigers would score on another 15-yard touchdown through the air putting TSU up 14-0.
WIU responded in the second quarter with a field goal by Antonio Chadha from 21 yards, bringing them to within 11 points. On the following TSU drive, they would find the end zone on a 37-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers would score again following a short WIU drive on a one-yard rushing touchdown to extend TSU's lead to 28-3.
After forcing a turnover deep in their own territory, the Leathernecks would score late in the first half as Nathan Lamb's 14-yard touchdown pass to Cameren Smith cut TSU's lead to 28-10. Chadha closed the first half with a 44-yard field goal, bringing WIU to 13 points at the break.
In the second half, TSU would score first in the third quarter on a 24-yard touchdown pass, making it 35-13 with 6:29 left and would be the only points scored in the third quarter. WIU attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter as Lamb scored on a six-yard rushing touchdown making it 35-20. The Tigers would respond with a 31-yard field goal using almost six minutes of clock to make it 38-20 with 7:30 to go in the game. TSU would score late in the game with a 39-yard rushing touchdown bringing the final score to 45-20.
Lamb threw for 266 yards on 24 completions, including a touchdown pass, while also leading the team in rushing with 74 yards and a rushing touchdown. Demari Davis led the receivers with 62 receiving yards and Ryan Crandall was a defensive standout, finishing with 16 tackles, including three for loss and one sack.
WIU will now hit the road next week to take on SEMO. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
