Western Illinois Heads West Looking for Win

Leathernecks take on Southern Utah on Saturday

MACOMB – The Western Illinois football team closes out the non-conference portion of the schedule, making their second flight of the season, this one to Southern Utah. Both teams come in looking for their first win of the season, both coming off close losses. This is Southern Utah's first home game of the season.

LAST WEEK | Both teams lost close games, with the Leathernecks falling 43-40 to Lindenwood. The Thunderbirds also dropped a one-score contest, losing to UC-Davis 23-21.

Western Illinois led Lindenwood by 17 in the first half before the Lions rallied, outscoring the Leathernecks 29-9 after the break. The Thunderbird trailed throughout, cutting the deficit to 23-21 with :45 to go, but could not recover an onside kick.

PLAYERS TO WATCH | Western Illinois: Matt Morrissey, Quarterback. Morrissey's 392 yards passing last week were the most by a Western Illinois quarterback since Connor Sampson threw for 449 yards against Indiana State in 2021. Morrissey is second in the MVFC in passing yardage (845), TD passes (six) and passing yards per game (281.7).

Safety Bradyn Smith leads the MVFC in solo tackles (23) and total tackles (33).

Jay Parker and Jaylin Jackson became the first WIU receiving duo to go for over 100 yards in a game since Dallas Daniels and Tony Tate against Indiana State in 2021. Parker's 10 catches were the most receptions for a WIU receiver since Dennis Houston had 14 catches against South Dakota State in 2021.

Southern Utah: Quarterback Justin Muller is 44-89 with two interceptions, five touchdowns and 685 yards passing this season He throws for 227.33 yards per game.

Zach Mitchell and Isaiah Wooden have a combined 30 receptions for 540 yards and 5 TDs this season.

Kohner Cullimore leads the defense with 20 total tackles
 
HISTORY | Western Illinois leads the all-time series between the two schools, 4-1. Southern Utah won the most recent matchup, 17-10 in Macomb last season. A 73-yard touchdown pass by the Thunderbirds with :33 left was the difference. The Leathernecks committed five turnovers in the game last season.

WHAT'S NEXT | The Leathernecks head into their bye week, then begin Missouri Valley Football Conference play on October 7, traveling to Grand Forks, North Dakota to take on The Fighting Hawks of North Dakota.
